Battery system details and investment size
PPC Renewables Romania plans to install a 40.08 MW/80.16 MWh battery at its Corugea wind farm, creating a two-hour storage system. The project is described as being intended to improve the commercial and grid performance of the existing renewable asset. The investment is estimated at approximately €17.6 million, equivalent to about €220,000 per MWh of storage capacity.
Funding for the battery includes around €2 million from the EU Modernisation Fund, representing just over 11 per cent of the total. PPC financing will cover the remaining amount.
Connection, generation profile and emissions impact
The battery will be connected to the 70 MW Corugea wind farm near Casimcea in southeastern Romania. The wind project includes 35 wind turbines and produces approximately 190,000 MWh annually. PPC estimates a capacity factor close to 31 per cent.
PPC estimates the plant supplies the equivalent of more than 70,000 households and avoids over 130,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The addition of storage is aimed at enabling changes in how output is delivered over time.
Operational purpose and market participation
PPC says adding storage will allow the wind farm to shift part of its output into higher-value hours. The battery is also intended to help manage short-term forecast errors and reduce exposure to imbalance costs. PPC describes a battery power rating equal to approximately 57 per cent of the wind farm’s installed capacity as providing flexibility without storing the full output.
The project has been selected under Romania’s Modernisation Fund programme for battery systems connected to operational renewable plants. The support structure directs capital towards hybridisation rather than standalone storage, linking public funding to assets with an existing generation profile and grid connection.
Portfolio expansion and bankability considerations
PPC Renewables is seeking to expand its Romanian renewable portfolio towards 2 GW. It intends to bring further storage capacity online, with Corugea presented as a repeatable model for upgrading existing wind projects through storage rather than developing entirely new generation.
PPC states the investment case is based on multiple revenue sources including energy shifting, balancing participation, reduced imbalance exposure and better control over delivery during constrained periods. It adds that bankability will depend on how these revenues are contracted and whether the battery’s operating strategy can preserve capacity while capturing Romania’s widening hourly price spreads.
