Romania’s state-controlled gas producer Romgaz recorded a 5.6% year-on-year decline in domestic gas sales during the first nine months of 2026, to approximately 3.43 billion cubic metres. Natural gas output fell 2.1%, with production equivalent to 23.14 million barrels of oil equivalent. Total hydrocarbon production decreased 2% to 23.49 million boe. The sharper fall in sales than in production points to lower volumes delivered to the domestic market.

Electricity generation remains broadly stable

Romgaz power plants generated 484.1 GWh of electricity in the period, up 0.8% from the corresponding nine months of 2025. Generation therefore remained broadly stable. The increase contrasted with the declines in gas production and domestic sales.

Neptun Deep preparations and credit rating

Romgaz is continuing preparations for the Neptun Deep offshore gas project with OMV Petrom. Once production begins, the project is expected to materially increase Romania’s domestic gas supply. Fitch Ratings recently reaffirmed Romgaz’s long-term issuer default rating at BBB-, maintaining a negative outlook.
