Croatia’s Trtar-Krtolin wind farm is preparing a repowering project that would lift its installed capacity from 11.2 MW to 30 MW and add a battery storage system. The development is being led by Vjetroelektrana Trtar-Krtolin, a subsidiary of German renewable energy developer wpd. The project would almost triple the site’s generating capacity.
The plan would replace the existing 14 Enercon E-48 turbines, each rated at 800 kW. In their place, the wind farm would have five turbines rated at 6 MW each. This would increase its installed capacity to 30 MW from 11.2 MW.
Four battery units are planned, with combined storage capacity of 10 MW/20 MWh. The system is intended to improve the plant’s ability to manage intermittent generation. It would also give the wind farm greater flexibility to participate in the electricity market.
Repowering the existing site
Located near Šibenik, Trtar-Krtolin has been operating since 2006. It was Croatia’s second wind farm. The reconstruction is expected to proceed in stages.
Work would include building new turbine foundations and installing electrical connections. The plans also include communications infrastructure. Much of the site’s established grid and energy infrastructure would remain in use.
