Croatian electrical-equipment group Koncar has secured an €11.5 million contract from transmission operator HOPS to install a phase-shifting transformer at the Gracac substation. The equipment will help HOPS control cross-border electricity flows by managing active-power distribution more precisely. It will also reduce loading on individual transmission lines and improve the use of existing network infrastructure.
The investment comes as Croatia connects more renewable generation, which is making power-flow patterns less predictable. Equipment that can redirect electricity through the transmission system is becoming more valuable in this context. The transformer is expected to give HOPS greater flexibility to accommodate additional renewable generation without relying solely on new transmission-line construction.
GreenSwitch project and delivery
The work is part of the GreenSwitch cross-border infrastructure programme, supported by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility. CEF Energy funding covers 50% of eligible costs. Koncar will supply and install the transformer, with several companies within the group providing equipment, engineering and technical services.
