Battery-storage projects near Caracal
Turkish renewable developer Defic Globe is preparing two battery-storage projects alongside operational solar assets near Caracal in Romania’s Olt county. The projects are being developed as additions to existing generation rather than standalone developments. Both batteries are planned with an installed power rating of 5 MW.
The storage units will be paired with photovoltaic plants of 6.89 MW and 7.26 MW. The pairing results in battery capacity that is relatively high compared with the generation assets. The energy capacity in megawatt-hours has not been disclosed. As a result, the intended storage duration and the full investment envelope remain unclear.
Future PV development and financing requirements
The battery-storage projects are being developed through Future PV, a subsidiary of Defic Globe Enerji. Romanian licensing procedures generally require evidence that financing is available before construction approval. This makes the financing package a key threshold for moving the batteries into implementation.
Before the current battery work, Defic Globe completed its first Romanian investment: an 18 MW solar plant in Caracal. The company also opened a Bucharest office at the end of 2024. It later acquired 15 project companies with a combined renewable pipeline of 219 MW. The group also reported plans for approximately 320 MWh of battery storage.
Romanian portfolio scale and partner-backed solar pipeline
The acquisition increased Defic Globe’s Romanian development portfolio to around 590 MW. Majority shareholder YEO Technology valued the investment platform at approximately €220 million. In addition to the Caracal batteries, the company is developing two solar projects totalling 21.3 MW at Bobicești.
The company has also entered partnerships covering larger portfolios, including 129 MW with Shanghai Electric Power and 190 MW with Norway’s Scatec. The Scatec-linked portfolio represents investment of approximately €140 million. Contracts for difference cover 70 per cent of its capacity.
Addition to operating assets and planned evidence from dispatch
The Caracal batteries are smaller than Defic Globe’s broader development platforms but are described as commercially relevant due to their integration with operating solar assets. Their performance is expected to provide direct evidence on dispatch, degradation, imbalance reduction and market revenues. This would be gathered before deployment of the larger planned pipeline of approximately 320 MWh.
