Electricity traded on North Macedonia’s MEMO day-ahead exchange increased 74% year on year to 179.2 GWh in September. The rise points to growing use of the organised market.

September volumes and price movements

Trading volumes fell 10.3% from August, while the average clearing price moved higher. The average clearing price increased 10% month on month to €150.49/MWh. Average daily trading reached approximately 5,973 MWh.

Peak-period pricing versus monthly averages

The reported peak-period average was €121.40/MWh, which was below the overall monthly average. This difference reflects how delivery hours affect purchasing costs and generation revenues. The gap between peak-period and overall prices indicates that monthly baseload averages alone cannot fully describe exposure.

Exchange launch and year-on-year comparison

The exchange was launched in May 2023. It is handling substantially more electricity than a year earlier, when September trading totalled approximately 102.9 GWh.

Higher annual turnover suggests a deeper market, although the monthly decline shows activity remains variable. For participants, September combined greater trading volumes than a year earlier with a higher average procurement price than in August. The timing of consumption and production remains material to realised costs and returns.
