North Macedonia generated 408,045 MWh of electricity in June 2026, a 13.2% decrease versus June 2025. The change reflected weaker output from thermal, wind and solar sources alongside a rise in hydropower generation. Figures were cited from the State Statistical Office .
Demand coverage and domestic generation
Total electricity consumption reached 446,814 MWh during the month. Domestic generation met 91.3% of demand, according to the same State Statistical Office data. The remaining balance was covered through cross-border flows.
Thermal output down while hydro rises
Thermal power plants produced 131,405 MWh, accounting for 32.2% of total generation. Thermal output was 23.6% lower year on year. Hydropower moved in the opposite direction, with hydro plants generating 99,639 MWh, or 24.4% of total output.
Hydropower generation was up 36% compared with June 2025. The shift in the generation mix contributed to the overall year-on-year decline in total production despite higher hydro volumes.
Wind and solar generation trends
Wind farms generated 14,010 MWh, down 13.4% from June 2025. Solar plants, including prosumers, produced 159,796 MWh. Solar remained the largest individual generation source in the month at a 39.2% share, though output was 12.2% below the previous year.
Imports and exports change
Electricity imports fell to 99,906 MWh, compared with 113,250 MWh in June 2025. Exports declined more sharply, reaching 61,137 MWh, versus 102,494 MWh a year earlier . The figures show domestic supply covering most demand while cross-border volumes adjusted alongside changes in generation.
The overall pattern reflected a generation mix increasingly shaped by variability in solar and hydropower output. With thermal and other renewable production lower than a year earlier, part of the system balance relied on imports during June.
