In the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, gross electricity production reached 534 GWh in September, up 15.3% from 463 GWh in September 2025. The increase came as domestic coal output continued to decline. Greater hydropower and non-coal generation helped maintain the system balance, according to the production figures.

Thermal plants supplied 59.9% of gross output, hydropower 31.5% and wind 8.6%. Net generation totalled 482 GWh, including 282 GWh from thermal plants, 154 GWh from hydropower and 46 GWh from wind farms. The figures cover electricity generation in the Federation.

Higher domestic output reduced the Federation’s reliance on electricity imports, which fell to 99 GWh from 176 GWh a year earlier. Exports also decreased, dropping to 45 GWh from 133 GWh. This indicates that most of the additional generation was absorbed by the local system rather than sold abroad.

Coal production continues to decline

Coal production data remained considerably weaker. Brown-coal output fell 32.7% to 216,984 tonnes, compared with 322,292 tonnes in September 2025. Lignite production dropped 20.7% to 104,516 tonnes from 131,720 tonnes.

The divergence between stronger electricity generation and lower coal production leaves the Federation facing a structural challenge also seen in several Western Balkan power systems. Thermal generation remains central to security of supply. At the same time, the fuel base supporting it is becoming increasingly constrained.
