Gross electricity generation in Bosnia and Herzegovina reached 1,090 GWh in August, down from 1,122 GWh a year earlier. Lower thermal output outweighed increases in hydropower and renewable generation.
Thermal plants supplied 62.1% of gross generation, remaining the largest source. Hydropower accounted for 27.9%, while wind and solar together contributed 10% to the country’s power mix.
Net hydropower production rose 17.1% year on year to 287 GWh. Thermal generation fell 13.8% to 598 GWh, while wind and solar output increased 6.9% to 109 GWh.
Imports rose as thermal generation declined
Electricity imports increased 20.8% to 436 GWh, compared with 361 GWh in August 2025. Exports edged up 0.7% to 595 GWh, from 591 GWh.
Coal production figures also showed declines. Lignite output was down 3.9% year on year at 498,000 tonnes, while brown-coal production fell 29.7% to 306,000 tonnes.
Natural-gas imports dropped 45.7% to 5.69 million cubic metres, from 10.48 million cubic metres a year earlier. Hydropower and new renewables offset part of the fall in coal generation, but did not prevent import requirements from rising as thermal availability weakened.
