Gross electricity production in Bosnia and Herzegovina totaled 1,384 GWh in March 2026, according to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The figure was down from 1,494 GWh in the same month of the previous year. This points to a year-on-year reduction in total generation output.
Generation mix shifts between hydro and thermal
Hydropower plants accounted for the largest share of production at 46.5%. Thermal power plants followed at 46.1%, while solar and wind together contributed 7.4%. The data indicate a generation mix that remains balanced but is slightly tilted toward hydro.
Net hydropower production reached 641 GWh, up 15.5% year-on-year. Thermal power generation fell to 569 GWh, down 23.1% compared with March 2025. Electricity from renewable sources including wind and solar totaled 102 GWh, which was 3.8% lower year-on-year.
Imports rise while exports edge lower
Electricity imports increased by 33.6%, reaching 437 GWh. This compared with 327 GWh in the same period last year. Exports declined by 3.4%, falling to 732 GWh, from 758 GWh in March 2025.
The changes left net export capacity weaker on a month-on-month basis, based on the reported import and export volumes. The figures were recorded alongside the generation data for March 2026.
Lignite output and gas imports move in opposite directions
Lignite production in Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to 593,000 tons, down 3.6% year-on-year. Brown coal output dropped more sharply by 52.3%, totaling 230,000 tons. The figures reflect continued pressure on domestic coal mining output.
Natural gas imports rose to 26.65 million cubic meters, up 11% from 24 million cubic meters in March 2025. The increase points to slightly higher gas demand within the energy system during the month.
