Weekly demand changes across key European power markets
In the second week of June, electricity demand increased across most major European markets compared with the previous week. Italy recorded the largest weekly rise at 7.3%, while Germany followed with a 5.7% increase. The figures also reflect a rebound after two consecutive weeks of declining demand.
Growth was also reported in France, Spain, Belgium, and Portugal. The increases ranged from 0.5% in France and Spain to 3.9% in Portugal. Spain extended its positive pattern, registering a fourth consecutive week of demand growth.
Temperature movements and holiday effects on consumption
Alongside the demand changes, average temperatures rose in most of the analyzed countries during the same period. The temperature increase was largest in Portugal, up by 1.1°C, while France saw a rise of 0.1°C. Italy and Spain recorded temperature gains of 0.7°C and 0.8°C, respectively.
Temperatures declined in Great Britain, Belgium, and Germany. The drops ranged from 0.9°C in Great Britain to 1.7°C in Germany. In Italy and Portugal, demand was also supported by a rebound in business activity after public holidays.
The holiday effect cited for Italy was Republic Day on June 2. In Portugal, Corpus Christi on June 4 was linked to higher consumption following the holiday period. Germany also saw business activity recover after regional celebrations of Corpus Christi, contributing to increased electricity use.
