Romania: Electricity market sees price increase and volume decline in January 2025

In January 2025, the average electricity price on the day-ahead market of the Romanian energy exchange OPCOM reached 139.45 euros/MWh, marking a 59.06% increase compared to January 2024, though it was 1.16% lower than the previous month’s price of 141.08 euros/MWh. The total traded volume in January was 1.65 million MWh, which is 20.52% less than the same month last year and slightly lower (0.01%) than in December 2024. The average traded volume for January 2025 amounted to 2,215.9 MWh/h.

The total value of transactions in January amounted to 244.3 million euros, reflecting a 30.95% increase compared to January 2024 (186.6 million euros), but a 3.13% decrease from the previous month (252.2 million euros). The day-ahead market accounted for 34.73% of forecasted net consumption in January 2024.

On the intraday market, a total of 181,871.6 MWh was traded in January, representing a 12.55% increase compared to January 2024 and a 4.22% rise from December. The average price on the intraday market was 132.7 euros/MWh, which is 39.54% higher than in January 2024 but 12.83% lower compared to December 2024.

Additionally, the total traded volume for bilateral contracts in January amounted to 1.279 million MWh, with an average price of 103.72 euros/MWh.
