PPC Energie has introduced a pilot program in Romania aimed at promoting the use of electricity during peak solar generation hours. This initiative allows selected households to access electricity at no cost during designated times, thereby encouraging a shift in consumer demand towards periods when solar energy production is maximized.
The trial will take place from June to September 2026, with customer registration available from May 7 to May 20. The program is limited to the first 5,000 eligible participants, who could potentially benefit from around 70 hours of free electricity each month throughout the four-month duration.
This initiative is part of PPC Energie’s strategy to showcase the advantages of renewable energy integration and advanced digital power systems. The company aims to assist consumers in modifying their energy usage habits to align with high solar output periods, which may lead to decreased overall electricity expenses. Eligibility for the program requires households to have smart meters that are connected to PPC Energie’s digital metering infrastructure. Participants will receive notifications about free electricity intervals via email and through the myPPC mobile application at least 12 hours prior to the start of each interval.
Importantly, this pilot program does not alter existing electricity contracts or tariff structures. Instead, customers will receive a commercial bonus on their monthly bills reflecting the amount of electricity consumed during the specified free periods. The discount will be automatically calculated based on data from regional distribution operators.
PPC Energie has indicated that this program may promote the use of energy-intensive appliances and electric vehicle charging during times of high solar generation. Ionuț Duna, General Manager of PPC Energie, emphasized that this initiative is designed to educate customers about the benefits of solar energy and underscore the importance of smart energy infrastructure in managing electricity demand effectively.
