The Croatian hydropower sector is poised for a major upgrade as Končar, an engineering group, has finalized a €95.2 million contract with HEP Proizvodnja, the generation subsidiary of the national power utility. This project aims to modernize the HPP Varaždin facility, which plays a critical role in Croatia’s energy landscape.
The agreement entails a complete reconstruction of two generating units on a turnkey basis. Končar will manage the entire process, including technical documentation, manufacturing, delivery of essential equipment, and installation of all related systems. The project is slated for completion within 53 months, targeting a finish date in 2030.
HPP Varaždin boasts an installed capacity of 94 MW, ranking as the sixth-largest hydropower plant among HEP’s 27 hydro facilities. Originally commissioned in 1975, it is one of three plants on the Drava River, alongside HPP Čakovec and HPP Dubrava. Since 1998, operations for these facilities have been centralized through a remote control and monitoring center located in Varaždin.
This contract is strategically significant for Končar, as multiple subsidiaries within the group will be involved in its execution. It reinforces Končar’s expertise in handling complex energy infrastructure projects and showcases its ability to undertake large-scale modernization efforts that enhance reliability and operational efficiency.
The planned reconstruction is anticipated to extend the operational lifespan of HPP Varaždin while improving its overall performance. This initiative aligns with Croatia’s broader sustainability objectives and energy transition goals, contributing to the long-term stability of the nation’s power system.
