During calendar week 13, hydropower generation in Southeast Europe experienced a notable increase of 17.35% (+553.5 GWh), although the distribution of this growth was uneven across the region. This disparity underscores the fragmented hydrological conditions that characterize various countries within Southeast Europe.
The most significant contributor to this surge was Türkiye, where hydropower output rose by 28.24% (+607.7 GWh). This increase likely indicates improved reservoir inflows or enhanced operational efficiency at hydro facilities, playing a crucial role in stabilizing regional supply dynamics.
Croatia and Serbia also reported substantial gains in hydropower production, with increases of 244.26% and 153.98%, respectively. While these figures stem from relatively low production baselines, they nonetheless provided essential support to local energy systems, thereby decreasing dependence on thermal generation sources.
Conversely, several key markets faced declines in hydropower output. Greece recorded a significant drop of 38.67%, while Bulgaria’s output decreased by 23.48%. Italy and Romania also noted smaller reductions in their hydropower generation.
This divergence in performance can be attributed to localized hydrological factors, including varying rainfall patterns and differing reservoir management strategies across the region. Unlike wind and solar energy, which are affected by broader climatic trends, hydropower output is often contingent upon specific river basin conditions and water storage levels.
From a market perspective, the recent uptick in hydropower generation provided temporary relief from system tightness, particularly in areas where hydropower serves as a balancing resource. By displacing higher-cost energy sources, hydro generation contributed to observed modest price declines during the week.
However, the inherent variability of hydropower output raises concerns regarding its long-term reliability as a stabilizing energy source. Market participants have noted that while hydropower can offer short-term flexibility, its effectiveness is heavily reliant on seasonal weather patterns and climatic conditions.
As Southeast Europe transitions into the spring and early summer months, hydropower generation is anticipated to remain a critical factor, especially within the Western Balkans. The actual impact of hydropower contributions will largely depend on forthcoming rainfall patterns and strategic reservoir management decisions made by operators throughout the region.
