During calendar week 13, cross-border electricity flows in South-East Europe experienced a notable increase, underscoring the growing interdependence among regional markets and evolving supply-demand dynamics. The total net imports across the region rose by 27.91%, indicating a shift towards greater reliance on external energy sources.
Hungary and Croatia were among the markets most affected, with net imports increasing by 40.86% and 33.66%, respectively. These figures suggest tightening domestic supply conditions, prompting these countries to seek additional imports to meet their energy needs.
Italy continues to dominate as the largest importing market in the region, maintaining a significant structural deficit that positions it as a key player in regional price formation. Despite an uptick in renewable energy generation, Italy remains heavily dependent on imports to satisfy its demand.
Conversely, several countries have reported declines in their net export positions. Greece’s exports fell by 25.05%, while Romania experienced a sharp decrease of 67.27%. Bulgaria’s exports also dropped by 34.47%, reflecting tighter domestic balances and heightened internal consumption. Türkiye similarly reduced its export levels by 18.51%, driven by increasing domestic demand that has limited its surplus.
A standout development was Serbia’s significant reduction in net imports, which decreased by 76.93%. This shift is attributed to enhanced domestic generation capabilities, particularly from renewable and hydroelectric sources, enabling Serbia to move closer to a balanced energy position.
The rise in cross-border flows emphasizes the critical role of interconnections in stabilizing the South-East European electricity system. However, persistent congestion on essential transmission corridors hampers the efficiency of these flows, leading to price discrepancies across different markets.
From a trading perspective, the intensification of cross-border electricity transactions presents new opportunities for arbitrage. However, it also introduces complexities related to transmission constraints and the allocation of capacity, necessitating careful navigation by market participants.
