Bulgaria has taken a significant step towards enhancing its energy security by submitting a national strategy aimed at diversifying its natural gas supplies to the European Commission. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on Russian gas imports and align with evolving EU regulations focused on energy independence.
The submitted document outlines a detailed roadmap for Bulgaria to secure alternative gas supply sources, expand critical infrastructure, and improve access to international gas markets. Central to this strategy is the enhancement of supply resilience through diversification and integration with the wider European energy framework, which is increasingly important in the current geopolitical climate.
A key component of the plan involves the further development of the Vertical Gas Corridor, which aims to facilitate more efficient gas transit across the region. Additionally, Bulgaria plans to modernize existing regional interconnectors and expand the Chiren underground gas storage facility. The strategy also emphasizes increasing access to liquefied natural gas (LNG) via international import terminals, enabling Bulgaria to better adapt to market fluctuations and potential supply disruptions.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Energy has indicated that several elements of this strategy are already in motion. Ongoing projects include infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving system flexibility and enhanced coordination among state institutions and energy operators, which is essential for ensuring efficient market operations.
Outgoing Energy Minister Traicho Traikov highlighted Bulgaria’s proactive approach in contributing to broader European initiatives designed to bolster energy independence and resilience. He noted that the strategy reflects Bulgaria’s commitment to playing a crucial role in regional energy security while supporting the stability of European energy systems and economies.
Officials have stated that the submitted strategy aligns fully with EU principles regarding solidarity among member states and the free movement of natural gas within the internal market. The Ministry further emphasized that this initiative enhances Bulgaria’s position as a vital player in the regional energy network and a dependable partner in fostering a more interconnected and competitive European gas market.
