PPC Renewables Romania integrates storage at Colibași site
PPC Renewables Romania is adding a battery energy storage system to its existing solar power plant in Colibași, located in Giurgiu County. The company said the expansion involves integrating storage technology into an operational generation asset. The project is part of a broader approach that combines renewable output with storage to support flexibility and grid integration.
BESS specifications and financing from Modernization Fund
The planned BESS will be built with an installed power of 4.47 MW and a storage capacity of 8.94 MWh. The total investment is estimated at approximately €2.1 million. Around €385,000 is expected to be financed through grants from the EU-backed Modernization Fund.
Colibași solar plant operating since 2013
The battery installation will be added to the Colibași solar power plant, a 15-hectare facility that has been operational since 2013. The site includes more than 39,000 photovoltaic panels. PPC Renewables described the plant as one of its established generation assets in Romania.
Infrastructure upgrades for operations and security
Alongside the battery works, the project includes additional infrastructure upgrades. These cover construction of operation and maintenance facilities, improvements to internal roads and access infrastructure, and enhanced perimeter security systems. The scope also includes lighting and monitoring equipment, plus logistics areas needed for daily operations.
Storage role within an operating solar facility
PPC Renewables said integrating storage into an operational solar plant is intended to increase operational flexibility. The arrangement is designed to store excess solar generation produced during peak production hours. Stored electricity would then be delivered when demand is higher or when renewable output is lower.
