Romania’s delayed Iernut gas-fired facility could enter commercial operation by the end of June 2027. Synchronization with the national electricity network is targeted for the first quarter. Under the revised schedule, the 430-MW plant would connect to the grid by March, with technical testing and commercial operation to follow before the end of the second quarter.
Remaining work and plant design
State-owned gas producer Romgaz is coordinating the remaining work as general contractor. General Electric remains involved at the site. The combined-cycle plant is designed for projected gross electrical efficiency of 56.4% and flexible generation that can respond to changes in demand and renewable output.
Black-start capability and Romgaz strategy
Iernut will have black-start capability, enabling it to restart without an external electricity source. This could support restoration of Romania’s grid after a major system outage. The project is also part of Romgaz’s strategy to expand beyond natural gas production into electricity generation.
