Construction has officially begun on the Alibunar 1 and Alibunar 2 wind farms in Serbia. The combined project is valued at around €240 million and is being developed by Chinese company SANY. The start of works marks a new phase in renewable energy investment in the country.
The two wind farms are expected to reach commercial operation before the end of 2028. They are projected to generate approximately 460 GWh of electricity annually. Once online, the projects are expected to add a significant volume of clean power to Serbia’s electricity system.
SANY-led Alibunar project and expected commissioning timeline
SANY’s Alibunar investment represents the company’s first renewable energy project in Central and Eastern Europe. The company selected the Alibunar region based on strong and consistent wind conditions. The development is also described as a strategic entry point into the Serbian and broader regional energy market.
PowerChina is also involved in the development of the Alibunar wind farms. PowerChina said the project reflects strengthening cooperation between Serbia and China in the renewable energy sector. The cooperation highlighted relates to large-scale infrastructure and power generation projects, including wind.
Alibunar wind zone expands with additional planned capacity
Alibunar has increasingly emerged as one of Serbia’s key wind development zones. By 2028, four wind farms are expected to be operational in the municipality. Additional projects are already in preparation, indicating further concentration of wind capacity in the area.
The Alibunar 1 and Alibunar 2 developments are intended to expand Serbia’s renewable generation base as wind deployment increases. The projects form part of efforts to diversify Serbia’s electricity mix. This includes reducing reliance on conventional generation sources over the long term.
