Tesla discussions for three Bulgarian storage projects
Tesla is in talks to supply battery systems for three energy-storage projects in Bulgaria, as investment in the sector reaches €3 billion, according to former Energy Minister Delyan Dobrev. The projects are planned for Stara Zagora, Tvarditsa and Veliko Tarnovo. Dobrev said the Veliko Tarnovo development is particularly large and could become one of Europe’s biggest storage facilities.
Project capacities and delivery schedules have not been disclosed. Negotiations have also not yet produced a confirmed supply agreement. A potential Tesla contract would diversify a supply chain that is heavily reliant on Chinese equipment.
Investment growth tied to Bulgaria’s solar expansion
Dobrev estimated that around €3 billion had already been committed to battery energy-storage projects in Bulgaria. He said investment has accelerated alongside the country’s solar expansion. Solar output is associated with deeper daytime price reductions and a growing need to shift electricity into evening demand periods.
Batteries can absorb surplus renewable generation, limit curtailment and reduce exposure of solar producers to low or negative prices. They can also provide balancing and grid-support services. Returns, however, will depend on market spreads, connection availability and future competition between storage operators.
Potential impact on market revenues as more batteries compete
Bulgaria’s storage build-out is rapidly changing the economics of its power market. The volume of announced investment also raises a commercial question about whether price arbitrage and balancing revenues will remain strong once large numbers of batteries compete for the same hours. This issue is linked to how revenue opportunities may evolve as additional capacity comes online.
