Solar output rises across Europe as France, Spain and Italy hit new records

In the week of July 6, solar photovoltaic generation increased across Europe’s main electricity markets versus the previous week. The changes were supported by favourable weather conditions and strong solar irradiation. France recorded the largest weekly growth, with solar output up 14%, followed by Germany at 13% and Italy at 9.9%. Production also rose in Portugal by 7.6% and in Spain by 6.3%.

AleaSoft Energy Forecasting data also point to consecutive positive weeks for some markets. Portugal extended its positive trend for the second consecutive week, while Spain continued growth for the fourth consecutive week. The same period saw multiple countries reach their highest daily photovoltaic levels for July.

Daily solar photovoltaic records during the week of July 6

France set its highest-ever daily photovoltaic production on July 6, reaching 199 GWh. Spain recorded a record daily figure of 277 GWh on July 8. Italy established a new record on July 10, producing 167 GWh.

Portugal and Germany also logged their highest photovoltaic output levels ever for a July day, at 34 GWh and 494 GWh, respectively. Germany’s result represented its second-highest daily solar generation figure on record. The figures reflect continued expansion of solar capacity across Europe during the summer period.

AleaSoft outlook for solar in the week beginning July 13

For the week beginning July 13, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects solar photovoltaic production to continue increasing in Germany and Italy. The forecast also calls for a decline in Spain. These expectations are linked to short-term changes in weather patterns.

The forecast positions solar generation as a continuing contributor to Europe’s renewable electricity supply during summer. AleaSoft’s outlook indicates that near-term variability will remain a feature of solar output across major markets.

Wind generation changes during the week of July 6

Wind energy production during the week of July 6 showed a mixed pattern across Europe’s markets. Compared with the previous week, both Germany and France recorded increases. German wind generation rose by 11%, while French wind output increased by 22%.

AleasofT Energy Forecasting data show Germany achieved its second consecutive weekly increase, while France maintained an upward trend for the third consecutive week. In contrast, wind generation declined in southern European markets. Portugal recorded the largest decrease, with output down by [57%], followed by Spain at a reduction of [54%]. Italy saw a decline of [45%].

The reductions were attributed to lower wind availability across the Iberian Peninsula and Italy. Germany also reached a renewable milestone during this period by setting a new wind power record for a July day on [July 7]. Production reached [788 GWh], according to AleaSoft data.

AleaSoft forecast for wind starting July 13

For the week beginning [July 13], AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects wind production to recover in [Portugal], Spain and Italy. By contrast, Germany and France are forecast to experience lower output levels compared with the prior period.

The contrasting developments in solar and wind generation point to changing conditions across Europe’s renewable power system during summer weeks, including variability between technologies and markets. AleaSoft reports that flexibility solutions such as battery storage, demand response and improved market integration are relevant as the region continues transitioning toward renewable-based electricity supply.
