Solar photovoltaic generation moved in different directions across European electricity markets during the week of June 29. Portugal recorded the strongest increase among the analysed markets, with solar PV output rising by 12% week on week. Spain held generation levels broadly in line with the previous period. Germany, France and Italy saw declines in solar output.
Germany registered the largest reduction, with solar PV generation down 24% compared with the previous week. France followed with a 9.8% decline, while Italy recorded a smaller decrease of 1.1%. Italy marked its second consecutive week of lower solar production. The changes were linked to shifting weather conditions and solar availability across the region.
Record solar days in Portugal, Italy and Spain
Several markets reached milestones despite weekly declines in solar output. Portugal set an all-time daily record on 30 June, producing 35 GWh of solar electricity. Italy recorded its highest-ever solar output on 4 July, reaching 164 GWh. Spain also logged a July record on 5 July, with solar PV generation of 249 GWh.
For the week beginning 6 July, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting projected that solar generation would increase in Italy and Germany. The same forecast indicated a decline in photovoltaic production for Spain.
Wind generation rises across major European markets
Wind power generation increased across all major European electricity markets during the same period, reversing mixed trends from earlier weeks. Germany recorded the strongest growth, with wind generation surging by 156% week on week. France posted the smallest increase at 9.1%. Portugal, Spain and Italy reported rises of 62%, 70% and 122%, respectively.
The wind gains were associated with improved weather conditions across multiple markets. France, Portugal and Spain continued their upward trend for a second consecutive week. Germany and Italy recovered after declines during the previous two weeks.
July wind records and next-week outlook
Spain and Portugal reached new July wind generation records on 2 July. Spain produced 252 GWh of wind electricity, its highest daily output for a July day in the last four years. Portugal generated 66 GWh, its strongest July daily wind level in the last five years.
AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s wind projections for the week beginning 6 July pointed to further growth in Germany’s electricity market. Declines were expected in France, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula. The report also highlighted how renewable generation variability continued to influence European electricity markets through solar and wind output shaping price dynamics and trading opportunities across the region, AleaSoft reports.
