Electricity consumption across most major European markets declined during the week of June 29, with falling temperatures easing demand after periods of extreme heat. Belgium recorded the largest weekly decrease, with demand down 10%. Great Britain followed with a 9.8% week-on-week drop.
France reported a 8.5% fall in electricity consumption during the same week. Italy and Germany saw decreases of 5.3% and 4.7%, respectively. Spain recorded the smallest reduction, with demand slipping by 0.3% compared with the previous week.
Portugal records demand growth while most markets decline
Portugal was the exception to the broader downward trend, with electricity demand rising by 7.0% week on week. The Portuguese market continued an upward trajectory for a fourth consecutive week of demand growth. Warm weather conditions and higher consumption needs were cited as drivers of the increase.
The temperature profile differed across countries, shaping short-term demand outcomes. Belgium experienced the strongest cooling effect, with average temperatures falling by 8.1°C during the week. France followed with a 6.1°C decrease.
Cooling effects vary by country
Germany and Great Britain recorded average temperature declines of 5.9°C and 5.2°C, respectively. Temperature reductions were more limited in Italy and Spain, where averages dropped by 0.9°C and 0.3°C. Portugal was the only country showing an increase, with average temperatures rising by 1.6°C.
The cooler conditions contributed to lower electricity consumption across most European markets after earlier heatwave pressure. During the second half of June, high temperatures affected France, Italy, Belgium and Germany. Great Britain also faced a significant heat event between 24 and 28 June.
