Serbia expects construction of its gas interconnector with Romania to begin in early 2027, creating an import route intended to diversify supply and strengthen network resilience. Procurement for the Serbian section is expected to start shortly. Most technical and design work has already been completed for the approximately 13-kilometre pipeline connecting Serbia’s network with the Romanian border.
Serbia plans to complete its section during 2027, while Romania is preparing a substantially longer pipeline on its territory. The timing and length differences reflect the split scope between the two countries’ respective sections of the interconnector.
World Bank programme supports internal pipeline build-out
A recently approved World Bank programme also envisages around 150 kilometres of new pipelines within Serbia. The planned lines would connect the Romanian route with Banatski Dvor storage, Belgrade, Pančevo and the northern corridor towards Horgoš.
The internal expansion is intended to enable fuller use of the interconnector and improve reliability across the wider network. The additional connections would create more pathways for gas flows within Serbia, linking key storage and demand locations.
Potential follow-on petroleum-products link
For Serbia, the interconnector project would create another potential supply source and entry point into its gas system. Romania views the development as an opportunity to strengthen its position as a regional gas supplier.
The two countries may also discuss a petroleum-products pipeline aimed at supporting cross-border trade in refined fuels.
