Parliament extends emergency powers for crude and petroleum products

North Macedonia’s parliament has extended the country’s oil-supply emergency framework until April 20, 2027. The extension keeps government powers in place to respond to potential shortages and disruptions involving crude oil and petroleum products. The latest decision follows a six-month extension that is the third since the measures were introduced in March. It is designed to preserve the existing emergency response arrangements if market conditions deteriorate.

Timeline of the declaration since March 2026

The government of Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski first introduced the declaration on March 22, 2026 for a period of 30 days. Parliament later extended it for April 21–July 20, followed by a second period running from July 21 to October 20. The most recent approval carries the framework through the winter and into the spring. This allows authorities to maintain their response capacity without adopting a new emergency declaration.

Fuel cost measures and continuity of the precautionary approach

The government has also used its response to address the effect of fuel costs on consumers. An earlier measure reduced value-added tax on fuel, aiming to help contain prices and protect household purchasing power. The extension continues the existing precautionary framework rather than announcing a new tax reduction. It also does not indicate that a fresh supply interruption has occurred.

By keeping the arrangements in force, the government retains room to respond to renewed pressure on supplies or prices without first adopting another emergency declaration. This maintains continuity in how authorities can act if disruptions or price risks re-emerge. The framework remains focused on potential issues involving crude oil and petroleum products through the extended period.
