As the energy landscape continues to evolve, Romania’s prosumer solar market has experienced significant growth, nearing 290,000 registered prosumers and exceeding 3.3 GW of installed capacity by late 2025, according to data from the national energy regulator ANRE. This surge reflects a broader trend towards decentralized energy production and consumption in the region.
By November, the country reported nearly 288,000 prosumers, collectively generating approximately 3.35 GW. This marks an impressive annual increase of nearly 48% in the number of participants and over 43% in total capacity. The rapid adoption of rooftop and on-site solar technologies is particularly notable, with households comprising around 258,000 of these prosumers. In contrast, companies, public institutions, and other legal entities account for just over 30,000 participants. Despite this numerical dominance, capacity distribution between residential and non-residential sectors is nearly balanced: households contribute about 1.67 GW, while commercial and institutional systems provide around 1.68 GW.
The transformation of Romania’s solar landscape has been remarkable. At the end of 2019, the nation had only a few hundred prosumers. The installed capacity surpassed 3 GW for the first time in August 2025, highlighting a rapid transition towards renewable energy sources.
The integration of energy storage solutions is also gaining momentum. By November, over 58,000 installations included battery systems, primarily within residential setups. This indicates that more than one in five residential prosumers now utilize solar panels alongside storage solutions, which enhances both network flexibility and self-sufficiency. Industry estimates suggest that Romania’s total solar capacity—including large-scale power plants—has surpassed 7 GW in 2025, positioning the country as one of the region’s fastest-growing solar markets.
This rapid expansion not only underscores Romania’s commitment to renewable energy but also reflects a shift in consumer behavior towards more sustainable energy practices. As the market continues to develop, it will be essential for stakeholders to monitor regulatory frameworks and technological advancements that could further influence this dynamic sector.
