In January 2026, the average electricity price on Romania’s OPCOM power exchange reached €150.51 per megawatt-hour (MWh), reflecting a significant increase of 7.74% compared to the same month in 2025 and a notable rise of 27.94% from December 2025, when the average baseload price was recorded at €117.64/MWh. This upward trend in pricing underscores the evolving dynamics within the Romanian electricity market.
The total traded volume on the day-ahead market for January amounted to 1.52 million MWh. While this figure represents a year-on-year decline of 7.75%, it shows a recovery of 3.63% when compared to December’s trading volume. The average hourly traded volume during this period was approximately 2,044.2 MWh/h, indicating active participation in the market despite the overall decrease in annual volume.
Transaction values also exhibited contrasting trends, with the total reaching €236.1 million in January—a decrease of 3.38% from January 2025, which saw a value of €244.3 million. However, this figure marked a substantial increase of 34.69% from December’s transaction value of €175.3 million, highlighting seasonal fluctuations and increased trading activity at the start of the year. Notably, the day-ahead segment constituted 32.04% of forecasted net consumption during this period.
<pOn the intraday market, trading activity totaled 160,045.5 MWh in January, reflecting a decline of 12% compared to January 2025 and a drop of 6.57% from December levels. The average intraday price rose to €160.9/MWh, representing an increase of 21.25% year-on-year and a significant jump of 30.99% from December, indicating heightened volatility and demand pressures in the short-term market.
This combination of rising prices and fluctuating trading volumes signals an important phase for Romania’s electricity sector as it navigates supply-demand dynamics and regulatory influences within the broader Southeast European energy landscape.
