In January 2026, the Romanian energy exchange OPCOM reported an average electricity price of 150.51 euros/MWh on its day-ahead market. This figure represents a significant 7.74% increase compared to January 2025 and a notable 27.94% rise from December 2025, when the average baseload price was recorded at 117.64 euros/MWh.
The total traded volume on the day-ahead market for January reached 1.52 million MWh. This marks a 7.75% decline year-on-year; however, it shows a recovery with a 3.63% increase from the preceding month. The average hourly traded volume during this period was approximately 2,044.2 MWh/h.
The overall value of transactions on the day-ahead market amounted to 236.1 million euros in January, indicating a decrease of 3.38% compared to January 2025 but an impressive 34.69% increase from December 2025. Notably, the share of the day-ahead market in the forecasted net consumption was recorded at 32.04%.
On the intraday market, activity totaled 160,045.5 MWh in January, reflecting a decrease of 12% year-on-year and a drop of 6.57% from December levels. The average price on this market rose to 160.9 euros/MWh, which corresponds to a substantial annual increase of 21.25%, along with a month-on-month rise of 30.99%.
This surge in prices and fluctuations in trading volumes underscore the dynamic nature of Romania’s electricity market as it adapts to changing demand patterns and regulatory influences within the broader Southeast European energy landscape.
