In October 2025, North Macedonia experienced a notable surge in electricity production, reflecting a robust domestic supply that underpins the nation’s energy landscape. The total electricity consumption for the month reached 552,055 MWh, with natural gas consumption at 32.7 million cubic meters, coal usage at 340,268 tons, and petroleum products at 101,913 tons. The State Statistical Office reports that an impressive 92.6% of electricity consumption was satisfied through domestic production, highlighting the country’s reliance on its own energy resources.

The gross electricity production in North Macedonia hit 511,057 MWh, marking a striking 45.1% increase compared to October 2024. This growth can be attributed to various energy sources: thermal power plants generated 208,015 MWh (40.7%), reflecting a year-on-year increase of 23.9%. Hydropower plants contributed 101,523 MWh (19.9%), up by 25.5%, while combined heat and power (CHP) plants saw a remarkable rise of 142.4%, producing 143,030 MWh (27.5%). Wind farms added 34,784 MWh (6.8%), with biogas plants contributing 3,516 MWh and solar power plants generating 20,190 MWh—accounting for approximately 3.95% of the total electricity output.

In terms of trade dynamics, electricity imports fell to 149,453 MWh from 171,356 MWh in October of the previous year. Conversely, exports saw a significant increase to 108,455 MWh from just 70,189 MWh in October 2024. This shift indicates not only enhanced domestic production capabilities but also a growing position for North Macedonia in regional electricity markets.

The substantial rise in electricity generation underscores North Macedonia’s strategic focus on enhancing energy independence and sustainability through diversified sources. As the country continues to develop its energy infrastructure and policies, these figures will likely play a crucial role in shaping future investments and regulatory frameworks within the region.
