Serbia’s state-owned power utility, EPS, has reached a significant milestone in coal production at the Drmno open-pit mine, located near Kostolac. As of the end of the year, cumulative output at Drmno has surpassed 10 million tons, setting a new record for annual production. This figure eclipses the previous high of just under 9.908 million tons, underscoring the mine’s operational efficiency and strategic importance in Serbia’s energy landscape.
In addition to Drmno’s achievements, the Kolubara lignite basin also demonstrated robust production capabilities. Just one day prior to the Drmno announcement, miners at the Tamnava–West Field reported that they had met their full-year production target by extracting 11.5 million tons of coal by December 24. This output represents approximately half of both the planned and actual annual production for the entire Kolubara mining system, highlighting its critical role in Serbia’s energy supply chain.
The success at Tamnava is particularly noteworthy given the operational hurdles encountered throughout the year. EPS faced significant challenges, including a six-month downtime of one of its large bucket-wheel excavators. Despite these setbacks, the completion of the annual production plan reflects a remarkable achievement in operational resilience and resource management within EPS.
These milestones in coal production are essential as Serbia continues to navigate its energy transition while balancing domestic energy needs with environmental considerations. The increased output from both Drmno and Tamnava positions EPS favorably as it seeks to enhance its coal supply amidst evolving market dynamics and regulatory pressures regarding fossil fuel use.
