The Bulgarian hydropower sector is set to undergo significant enhancements following the recent contract awarded to Croatian engineering firm Končar. This €4.9 million project, initiated by state-owned utility NEK, focuses on the modernization of the Teshel and Devin hydropower plants, which are integral components of the Dospat–Vacha cascade.
The modernization effort will involve a complete overhaul of essential technological systems. Key upgrades will include advanced automation and control platforms, new excitation and turbine regulation systems, and enhanced protection equipment for generators and transformers. These improvements are aimed at boosting the operational efficiency and reliability of the plants within Bulgaria’s electricity grid.
This initiative is expected to significantly extend the operational lifespan of both facilities, ensuring they can continue to meet energy demands effectively. The strategic importance of these plants cannot be overstated, as they play a vital role in stabilizing Bulgaria’s energy supply.
Končar’s selection for this project marks an important milestone in its expansion within the Bulgarian market. The company has previously completed several hydropower projects in the region, including a full reconstruction of the Vacha-1 plant in 2022, which also involved upgrading associated infrastructure such as a 110 kV substation. With this latest contract, Končar reinforces its foothold in a market where it has been progressively increasing its influence, having executed four significant hydropower projects over the last six years.
The successful completion of the Teshel and Devin modernization will not only enhance operational capabilities but also contribute to Bulgaria’s broader energy strategy, which increasingly emphasizes sustainability and reliability in power generation. This development reflects ongoing efforts to modernize aging infrastructure across Southeast Europe, positioning regional utilities to better respond to future energy challenges.
