Environmental Assessment Initiated for Wind Farm Development
The Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina has commenced the initial environmental assessment procedure for the Slovinj wind farm project located in Glamoč. This step follows a formal request from the local developer, Vjetroelektrane, to prepare a preliminary environmental impact assessment (EIA) study, which is crucial for advancing the project.
Project Specifications and Investment Overview
The Slovinj wind farm is set to feature 23 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 6 MW, culminating in a total projected capacity of 138 MW. The anticipated annual energy generation from this facility is approximately 506 GWh. The investment required for this significant project is estimated at around €136 million, positioning it as one of the largest proposed wind power initiatives within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Historical Context and Site Analysis
Development efforts for the Slovinj wind farm began in 2009, marked by extensive monitoring of wind speed and direction in the area. This foundational research identified Glamoč as one of the most favorable locations for wind energy production in the country. Subsequent detailed wind studies conducted in 2013 and 2021 further validated site conditions, informing optimal turbine layout decisions.
Regulatory Approvals and Ownership Structure
In a significant regulatory milestone for the project, the Federal Ministry of Energy, Mining and Industry granted an energy permit to Vjetroelektrane in 2023, paving the way for construction to commence. Notably, Vjetroelektrane is owned by Sirena Anstalt, a company registered in Liechtenstein, highlighting the international interest in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s renewable energy sector.
