Kovačica wind complex expansion targets 200 MW after €140 million Pupin project

Serbia’s Kovačica wind complex is set to reach 200 MW of installed capacity following the addition of the Pupin wind farm. The Pupin development is backed by a €140 million investment supported by international lenders and renewable energy developers. The new capacity is expected to bring the combined project close to a doubling of the existing Kovačica site.

The original Kovačica project entered commercial operation in 2019 with 104.5 MW. With Pupin added, the expansion will increase the total installed capacity to around 200 MW. The development is designed to extend an established project platform built on prior cooperation between the same development partners.

Pupin wind farm scope and turbine configuration

The Pupin wind farm has an installed capacity of 95.5 MW. It will be equipped with 16 Nordex wind turbines as part of the new build. The addition raises the total number of turbines at the combined Kovačica-Pupin complex from 38 to 54.

Pupin is expected to generate approximately 220 GWh of electricity annually. That output is described as equivalent to the electricity requirements of more than 40,000 households. The generation profile for the overall complex will therefore depend on both existing Kovačica production and Pupin’s contribution.

Developers and financing arrangements for Serbia’s wind expansion

The Pupin project is being developed by Enlight Renewable Energy in partnership with Serbian developer New Energy Solutions. Enlight Renewable Energy and New Energy Solutions previously cooperated on the original Kovačica wind farm. That earlier collaboration supports continuity in project development for the expansion.

Financing for the new investment was arranged with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Erste Group and Erste Bank also supported the financing arrangements. The involvement of international financial institutions and commercial banks reflects continued lender interest in Serbian renewable energy projects with defined technical specifications and experienced developers.

Turbine supply and construction contractors in Serbia

Nordex supplied the turbines for the Pupin development. Construction works were entrusted to a consortium of Serbian contractors led by WD Concord West and Elektrozapad. The project also highlights participation from domestic engineering and construction companies in implementing larger-scale renewable generation investments.

For Serbia’s electricity system, additional wind capacity increases domestic renewable generation. It may also reduce reliance on imported electricity during periods of favourable wind conditions. Commercial performance, however, will depend on factors including generation forecasting, balancing arrangements, grid availability, and prices achieved during actual production hours.

Grid integration and market considerations for Kovačica-Pupin

The expansion takes place as Serbia manages how renewable generation growth aligns with transmission infrastructure and dispatchable supply needs. The Kovačica-Pupin complex will concentrate wind capacity at a single development location. This configuration reflects how existing renewable sites can accommodate further investment within Serbia’s power system.

The longer-term economic value of the combined project will be determined by reliable production and operational efficiency. It will also depend on the ability to market wind-generated electricity in a regional power system described as increasingly volatile. The contribution of Pupin to that outcome will therefore be linked to both operational results and market access during production hours.
