A new battery energy storage facility has entered operation in the southern Hungarian city of Baja. The project adds to Hungary’s expanding renewable energy infrastructure. The installation is located at a site that already hosts solar generation.
Merital Vagyonkezelo project details and site integration
The facility was developed by the local company Merital Vagyonkezelo. It includes a storage system with a total capacity of 3 MWh, with an investment of approximately €1.55 million. The battery is integrated with an existing solar power plant at the same location.
The connected solar asset has an installed capacity of 1.8 MW. The combined setup is designed to manage electricity output from the solar plant within operational constraints. Battery storage is used to hold energy when grid injection is restricted.
Storage during restricted injection and participation in balancing
The system stores excess solar electricity during periods when grid injection is limited. This approach is intended to improve utilization of renewable generation by capturing surplus output. It also reduces waste associated with curtailed production.
In addition to its role with solar integration, the facility will participate in Hungary’s balancing energy market. It will operate in the automatic frequency restoration reserve (aFRR) segment. This participation supports grid stability by responding to short-term fluctuations in electricity supply and demand.
Recovery and Resilience Plan financing for the battery project
Funding for part of the project was provided through Hungary’s Recovery and Resilience Plan. Under the scheme, the project received around €600,000 in non-refundable EU funding. The support is linked to energy transition investments in the region.
