Greece has commissioned a new high-pressure natural gas pipeline in Western Macedonia. The project expands the national gas transmission network and improves energy access in northern Greece. The infrastructure was developed by the gas transmission system operator DESFA.
The pipeline investment is valued at approximately €188 million. It comprises a 157-kilometer transmission line that runs through Central Macedonia to Kardia. DESFA said the development strengthens the backbone of Greece’s gas infrastructure.
Pipeline scope and connection to district heating plans
The new pipeline is intended to support the operation of a combined heat and power facility developed by Public Power Corporation (PPC). The CHP plant will supply district heating systems in Kozani, Ptolemaida, and Amyntaio. The district heating supply is expected to replace older lignite-based heating solutions in the region.
DESFA described the project as the largest recent expansion of Greece’s national gas transmission system. It is expected to enhance energy connectivity in areas that previously lacked direct access to natural gas infrastructure. The commissioning also aligns with ongoing changes in Western Macedonia’s power generation mix.
Energy transition and demand outlook for industrial and municipal use
According to DESFA, the pipeline will play a key role in supporting the energy transition in Western Macedonia. This is linked to the region’s shift away from lignite-fired electricity generation. DESFA also said the project is expected to improve overall energy supply security.
The company added that the pipeline will open additional opportunities for industrial and municipal gas consumption across Central and Western Macedonia.
