The global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market is experiencing heightened uncertainty as significant supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions emerge as critical factors influencing market dynamics. Recent developments, particularly a tropical cyclone affecting operations in Western Australia, have drawn attention to the vulnerabilities inherent in LNG supply chains.
The cyclone has notably impacted the Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG facilities, which together contribute over 5% of the world’s LNG supply. Although both facilities are still operational, they are functioning at reduced capacity. This situation raises concerns about the stability of global LNG supplies, especially given the current market’s limited spare capacity. Even short-term disruptions can lead to pronounced effects on pricing and availability across international markets.
Simultaneously, geopolitical risks in the Middle East are amplifying market volatility. Ongoing tensions involving Iran and threats to vital shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz have heightened fears of potential supply interruptions. Analysts caution that any prolonged disruption to LNG exports from Qatar, one of the largest global suppliers, could significantly impact market stability. A halt in Qatari exports lasting three months could potentially remove up to 21 million tonnes (Mt) of LNG from circulation, with European gas prices projected to rise to around €155/MWh.
This scenario would not only affect gas markets but also electricity prices, particularly in Southeast Europe (SEE), where natural gas plays a crucial role as a marginal fuel. The interconnectedness between global LNG markets and regional energy systems is becoming increasingly evident, with Europe’s dependence on LNG imports growing substantially in recent years. This dependency exposes European markets to fluctuations in global supply dynamics and competition from regions like Asia.
The shift in the role of LNG—from a supplementary balancing resource to a primary price determinant—means that events occurring far from Europe can have immediate repercussions on energy pricing.
