In mid-January, the European energy market experienced a notable divergence in solar and wind energy production across various countries. The German and Italian markets reported significant increases in solar photovoltaic (PV) energy output, while declines were observed in the Iberian Peninsula and France. Specifically, Germany’s solar production surged by 77%, marking a recovery after two weeks of reductions. Italy followed with a more modest increase of 7.1%. Conversely, Spain and Portugal faced substantial drops of 13% and 23%, respectively, while France recorded a 14% decline for the second consecutive week.
Looking ahead to the week of January 19, projections from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting suggest a rebound in solar production for both Germany and Spain. However, Italian solar PV output is expected to decline, indicating a shift in regional production dynamics.
Wind energy production presented a contrasting trend during the week of January 12, with significant decreases across major European markets. Italy experienced the most pronounced drop at 56%, following four weeks of growth. Spain’s wind output also fell sharply by 52%. Additionally, France and Portugal reported declines of 11% and 20%, respectively, while Germany’s wind production saw a slight decrease of 2.5%, continuing its downward trajectory for the second week.
For the penultimate week of January, AleaSoft’s forecasts indicate an anticipated increase in wind energy production within the Iberian Peninsula and Italian markets. However, output is projected to decline further in France and Germany, extending the downward trend observed previously.
