In a significant move towards modernizing its energy landscape, Serbia has appointed Transportgas Srbija as the national gas transmission system operator. This decision was confirmed during the latest government session and marks a pivotal step in the ongoing restructuring of the country’s gas sector, a process that has been in development for over a year.
Transportgas Srbija will be responsible for managing network access and ensuring the effective operation of the gas market. This appointment follows the company’s certification as an independent operator, which was finalized last spring and received endorsement from the Energy Community. The certification is seen as a crucial milestone in aligning Serbia’s energy practices with European regulations.
The restructuring efforts are part of Serbia’s broader national Reform Agenda, which includes significant reforms in the electricity sector expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Authorities have indicated that these reforms are designed to enhance regulatory independence and improve compliance with international energy standards.
Last year, Serbia introduced further changes by establishing Gas Infrastruktura, a new entity responsible for owning the physical gas infrastructure. This separation of asset ownership from commercial operations allows Srbijagas to focus on gas supply management while specialized companies handle infrastructure management and market regulation.
These developments represent a critical phase in Serbia’s efforts to overhaul its gas market. The reforms aim to fulfill international obligations, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and align the sector more closely with European standards, positioning Serbia for enhanced energy security and market efficiency.
