Wind and solar output decline outpaced regional demand in week to 20 September

Southeast Europe’s variable renewable generation fell faster than electricity demand in the week to 20 September. Wind and solar combined declined 8.0% to 3,381.01 GWh, while regional electricity demand dropped 6.37% to 16,542.31 GWh. Wind output decreased 10.3% to 1,407.02 GWh, and solar fell 6.2% to 1,973.99 GWh.

Diverging national performance across variable renewables

The decline varied between markets during the same period. Serbia’s variable renewable output fell 69.6%, while Croatia recorded a 54.3% drop. Romania saw a 25.9% fall in variable renewable generation.

Hungary moved in the opposite direction, with combined wind and solar output rising 3.0%. The increase was supported by a 5.3% rise in solar generation.

Demand weakness did not translate into uniform price relief

The gap between renewable output and demand contributed to differences in how power prices responded across the region. Falling regional consumption did not produce a consistent drop in prices during the week. Each market had to balance its own hourly generation, consumption and import options.

Timing of renewable output highlighted for market participants

The week also underscored that exposure for suppliers and plant operators depends on both the timing of renewable production and its weekly total. A sharp production decline can affect purchases, scheduling and balancing needs before it is reflected in the weekly average price.
