Europe: Brent, TTF gas, and CO₂ futures show volatility in late December

In the final week of December, energy markets in Europe exhibited notable fluctuations, particularly in Brent oil, TTF gas, and CO₂ emission allowances. Brent oil futures on the ICE market peaked at $62.38 per barrel on December 23 before settling at a weekly low of $60.64 per barrel by December 26. This represented a minor increase of 0.3% compared to the previous week, driven largely by geopolitical tensions involving the US and Venezuela, as well as ongoing conflicts affecting energy infrastructure in Ukraine.

Simultaneously, TTF gas futures showed a slight decline over the same period. The front month futures hit a weekly low of €27.69 per megawatt-hour on December 22 but rebounded to €28.10 per MWh on both December 24 and 26. This price movement was influenced by forecasts predicting colder temperatures in January and European gas storage levels dipping below 65%. However, an ample supply of gas prevented prices from surpassing last week’s figures.

On the emissions trading front, CO₂ allowance futures on the EEX market for the December 2026 contract maintained a robust position above €87 per ton. The lowest price recorded during the week was €87.47 per ton on December 22, while it reached a high of €88.55 per ton on December 23, marking the highest level since October 1, 2024. This upward trend reflects ongoing market dynamics and regulatory pressures aimed at reducing carbon emissions across Europe.

The interplay of these commodities illustrates the complexities facing energy traders and policymakers alike as they navigate through volatile market conditions influenced by both regional and global factors. As Europe moves into January with potential supply constraints and fluctuating demand due to weather patterns, stakeholders must remain vigilant in their strategies to mitigate risks associated with price volatility.
