EPCG to build virtual power plant platform for Montenegro’s rooftop solar growth

Montenegro’s state-owned power utility EPCG is preparing to develop a virtual power plant (VPP) platform. The system is intended to integrate and manage distributed energy resources via a unified digital platform. EPCG Technical Director Ljubisa Đurkovic said the work is linked to the company’s expanding renewable portfolio.

Solari rooftop solar programmes underpin distributed generation growth

The VPP initiative draws on Solari programmes launched in 2022. The schemes were designed to accelerate rooftop solar deployment across Montenegro. EPCG said the Solari 3000+, Solari 500+, and Solari 5000+ offerings encouraged households and businesses to install photovoltaic systems.

More than 10,000 prosumers have joined the Solari programmes. EPCG estimates the installations represent around 100 MW of installed solar capacity. The same portfolio is currently producing approximately 135 GWh of electricity annually.

Projected solar and wind output by end-2027

EPCG expects renewable generation to increase significantly in the coming years. By the end of 2027, solar and wind facilities in Montenegro are projected to generate around 500 GWh of electricity per year. The forecast points to continued expansion of clean energy capacity within the power system.

Energy storage focus and coordinated balancing through VPP

With higher renewable penetration, EPCG is increasingly focusing on energy storage and system balancing solutions. The planned virtual power plant is set to aggregate distributed energy assets into a single coordinated platform. EPCG said this approach would support more efficient management of electricity supply and demand.

The company also linked the VPP design to improving flexibility and stability in the power system as distributed generation grows.
