In March 2023, Slovenia experienced a 1.5% increase in electricity demand, with total withdrawals from the transmission network reaching 966.5 GWh. This uptick is indicative of ongoing industrial growth and reflects broader trends in energy consumption across the country.

The rise in demand was noted across all consumer categories, with the most substantial growth stemming from the Avče pump-storage hydropower plant, which reported an impressive 18.4% year-on-year increase in electricity consumption for its pumping operations. Additionally, direct consumers saw a notable demand increase of 9.9%, while distribution companies maintained stable consumption levels, showing only a marginal rise of 0.1%.

Analyzing the first quarter of 2023, total electricity consumption from January to March reached 3,243.7 GWh, surpassing last year’s figures by 3.8% and exceeding prior forecasts for this period by 3.4%. This consistent upward trend underscores the resilience and growth of Slovenia’s energy sector.

The distribution system operators played a crucial role in this growth, accounting for the largest share of total demand with a steady year-on-year increase of 3.4%. Direct consumers contributed even more significantly, reflecting heightened industrial and commercial activity with a rise of 9.1%. Furthermore, the operational needs of the Avče hydropower plant also added to the overall consumption increase, with a reported 3.7% rise compared to the previous year.

This data highlights a robust upward trajectory in Slovenia’s electricity consumption, driven by seasonal factors and increasing activity across various consumer segments as the economy continues to recover and expand.
