Serbian transmission system operator EMS has started upgrading the Bajina Bašta substation from 220 kV to 400 kV, supporting the western section of the Trans-Balkan Corridor. The project is valued at around €115 million for the current section. The works are focused on expanding key transmission infrastructure in the area.
Substation works and associated transmission upgrades
At Bajina Bašta, the upgrade includes a new 400 kV switchyard and two 400 MVA transformers. The substation expansion is being implemented alongside grid reinforcement connected to the Obrenovac area. This includes a double-circuit 2×400 kV line from Obrenovac and two additional bays at the Obrenovac substation.
Capacity support for Bistrica pumped-storage and corridor buildout
The upgrade is also intended to provide network capacity for the planned Bistrica pumped-storage plant. EMS said the corridor’s third section is scheduled for 2028. A further section toward Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro is planned for 2029, which would increase capacity for cross-border electricity flows once completed.
