Electricity demand diverges across Europe as Germany and Portugal rise

In the week of September 14, electricity demand moved in different directions across European markets. Demand increased in Belgium, Germany and Portugal compared with the previous week. Belgium posted the largest rise, up 1.5%, after two consecutive weeks of declines.

Germany’s demand grew by 1.4%, extending a run of four consecutive weeks of growth. Portugal recorded a 1.0% increase for the third straight week. In contrast, demand fell in Italy, Spain, Great Britain and France over the same period.

Declines in southern markets and Great Britain

The steepest drop was recorded in Italy, where electricity demand decreased by 7.3%. Spain and Great Britain both saw demand fall by 4.0%. France recorded a more moderate decline of 1.0%.

Italy, Spain and France also reported lower demand for the second consecutive week. The remaining countries with declines were Great Britain and France, with both included among the markets showing week-on-week decreases.

Temperature shifts alongside demand changes

Average temperatures declined during the week compared with the previous week in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and France. Italy recorded the largest temperature decrease at 1.8°C. Spain followed with a 1.3°C drop and Portugal with a 1.2°C decline.

Temperatures also fell by 0.4°C in Germany and by 0.2°C in France. By contrast, average temperatures increased by 0.5°C in both Great Britain and Belgium.

AleaSoft forecast for the week beginning September 21

For the week beginning September 21, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects electricity demand to increase in Portugal . AleaSoft reports that demand is forecast to decline in Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Great Britain and Spain .
