Croatian firms win €53.8mn contracts for North Macedonia wind and grid works

Croatian engineering companies Dalekovod and Končar have secured contracts worth a combined €53.8 million for a wind energy development in North Macedonia. The awards cover construction of the wind farm and transmission infrastructure to connect the project to the national electricity grid. The contracts are linked to a large wind power development delivered by a company owned by UAE-based investor Alcazar Energy.

The larger contract is valued at €31.3 million and relates to construction of the wind power plant. A second contract worth €22.5 million covers grid connection works. These include development of a new 400/35 kV substation (Baltalija) and a double-circuit 400 kV transmission line.

Wind farm capacity and link to Štip development

The project is expected to have an installed capacity of approximately 337.5 MW. It is widely associated with the planned Štip wind farm project. The Štip development is described as a flagship renewable investment within North Macedonia’s broader push to expand non-hydro renewable generation.

Transmission buildout for renewable integration in the Western Balkans

The scope of work extends beyond generation, with transmission assets intended to support evacuation of electricity from the facility. The involvement of Dalekovod and Končar also points to their role in regional energy infrastructure expansion in Southeast Europe. Both companies have previously participated in transmission and infrastructure projects in North Macedonia.

This latest contract further consolidates their position in the regional market for high-voltage grid and renewable integration projects. Across the Western Balkans, large-scale wind and solar projects are increasingly paired with investment in transmission infrastructure. The aim is to support grid stability while enabling higher shares of renewable energy in the system.
