North Macedonia approves smaller electricity price hikes for 2026 households

In a recent decision, North Macedonia’s Regulatory Commission for Energy (RKE) has approved adjustments to electricity prices for households in 2026. The approved increases are significantly lower than what was initially proposed by the supplier, EVN Home, reflecting a cautious approach to consumer affordability amidst rising energy costs.

The RKE revised the proposed increases across various consumption blocks. For the first block of consumption, which was initially set for an increase of nearly 8%, the regulator approved a modest rise of only 2.45%. Similarly, the second block will see a 2.87% increase, while the third and fourth blocks will experience increases of 3.32% and 3.84%, respectively. In addition, prices under the lower off-peak tariff will rise by 2.5%, compared to the almost 4% hike originally requested.

This decision aims to strike a balance between ensuring a reliable electricity supply and minimizing the financial impact on consumers. Households in the first two consumption blocks can expect their bills to increase by approximately 2.6%, while those in the third block will see an average rise of around 2.8%. The RKE has highlighted that these adjustments correct deficiencies in the initial proposal from EVN Home, thereby ensuring continuity of supply without imposing sudden or excessive price shocks on households.

Consumption patterns indicate that this restrained approach is warranted, as approximately 64% of residential customers fall within the first consumption block, nearly 21% in the second, and fewer than 2% reach into the third block. This distribution allows RKE to protect the majority of households while also maintaining financial stability within the electricity system.
