Bulgaria’s IBEX Power Market Experiences Significant Growth in January 2026

In January 2026, the Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange (IBEX) reported a substantial increase in trading activity, with a total of 2,886,403.1 MWh of electricity traded on the day-ahead market. This figure reflects an 11% rise compared to December 2025 and a 3.6% increase year-on-year. The average daily traded volume during this period was approximately 92,960.7 MWh, indicating heightened market engagement.

The pricing dynamics on the IBEX day-ahead market also exhibited notable changes. The average baseload price surged to 148.55 euros/MWh, marking a significant 27% increase from December’s price of 117.25 euros/MWh. Additionally, the average peak price rose to 172 euros/MWh, reflecting a month-on-month increase of 31%, which underscores the strengthening market conditions.

Market participation has expanded as well, with the number of registered participants increasing to 150, up by three from the previous month. This growth signals a continued upward trend in market activity and trader involvement, which is essential for a competitive energy market.

A significant milestone was reached on January 27, 2026, when a new daily trading record was established with volumes hitting 107,207.43 MWh. This surpassed the prior record of 104,445.8 MWh, set on January 14, 2024, representing an increase of approximately 3%. Such records highlight the robust demand and liquidity present in the market.

The intraday continuous market also saw positive developments, with total trades amounting to 665,583.4 MWh, reflecting an 8% growth. The average weighted price for intraday transactions reached 156.83 euros/MWh, which is a remarkable 25.9% increase. This trend indicates stronger pricing resilience in shorter-term trading segments.
