Bulgaria’s state-owned gas supplier Bulgargaz has proposed increasing the regulated wholesale natural gas price for September 2026 by 4.77% to approximately EUR 41.30/MWh. The proposal would set the September tariff at that level based on the regulated wholesale price.
The proposed September price is around 4.77% above the approximately EUR 39.40/MWh tariff approved for August. The August tariff had already increased by 4.5% compared with July, continuing a period of rising regulated wholesale gas prices in Bulgaria.
Regulatory review and timing for the September tariff
The September 2026 regulated wholesale gas price remains subject to review by the Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (KEVR). KEVR is expected to approve the final tariff on 1 September, following its assessment of the proposal.
Bulgargaz is expected to update its submission ahead of the regulator’s decision to reflect developments in international gas markets. KEVR is also expected to hold a public discussion toward the end of August as part of the price-setting procedure.
Potential differences from Bulgargaz’s initial proposal
Market conditions, including wholesale gas prices and other relevant supply costs, could result in a final tariff that differs from Bulgargaz’s initial proposal. The process therefore links the eventual regulated level to changes in underlying cost components during the review period.
The latest request indicates continued short-term pressure on Bulgaria’s wholesale gas market, with higher regulated supply costs potentially affecting both consumers and businesses as Bulgaria enters the autumn heating season.
