Bulgaria Faces Electricity Production Decline Amid Rising Consumption in Early 2026

In the first quarter of 2026, Bulgaria’s electricity production experienced a notable decline, with figures showing a decrease of 7.08% compared to the same period in 2025. The total output for January through March reached 7.92 TWh, as reported by the Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator (ESO). This downturn in production coincides with an increase in electricity consumption, which rose by 3.49% to a total of 8.45 TWh.

The shift in consumption patterns has led to significant net electricity imports, amounting to 533 GWh in early 2026. This increase in reliance on imported electricity highlights potential vulnerabilities in Bulgaria’s energy supply chain and raises questions about future energy security and pricing dynamics.

Baseload power generation, primarily from coal and nuclear sources, contributed 5.82 TWh to the overall electricity output. However, this figure represents a substantial reduction of 18.6% compared to the previous year, indicating challenges within these traditional energy sectors.

<pInterestingly, the contribution of renewable energy sources (RES) to the transmission network saw an uptick, rising by 4.31% to reach 507.8 GWh. Conversely, the share of RES in the distribution network fell by 6.1%, totaling 448.5 GWh. This mixed performance underscores the complex dynamics at play in Bulgaria’s energy landscape as it navigates between traditional and renewable energy sources.

The current trends in Bulgaria’s electricity sector reflect broader regional challenges and opportunities within Southeast Europe, as countries strive to balance production capabilities with growing demand while transitioning towards more sustainable energy systems.
